Cuba Street

Cuba Street’s playground brings together a familiar piece of Wellington play history with a new play space, located alongside the iconic Bucket Fountain in Cuba Street Mall.

Part of our Ngā Papa Tākaro range, the Papa Tākaro features steps, a slide and play panels, with cultural design by Darren Ward woven throughout the structure. The detailing includes Rongomātāne, deity of cultivated food, and flowing maihi patterns that reference the streams and gardens of the area, reflecting the relationships between Tangata Whenua, the natural environment and early settlers.

A carved tekoteko sits prominently at the centre of the roof, while custom Playtop safety surfacing continues the cultural detailing at ground level, with a koru pattern creating a distinctive feature through the play space.

Alongside the new play elements is Cuba Street’s much-loved tuatara. Originally from the 1990s, the tuatara was lovingly restored by Wētā Workshop before returning to its home at the Cuba Street playground, where it has been part of the space for roughly three decades. Its inclusion in the renewed playground retains a familiar piece of Cuba Street’s character and play history for another generation to enjoy.

Together, the Papa Tākaro, cultural artwork, local carving, custom surfacing and restored tuatara create a small but distinctive play space that feels right at home within the colourful and creative character of Cuba Street.
