Ruakākā School

Ruakākā School's new playground was designed as an extension of the school's culture, values and love of outdoor learning.

Working within a site filled with existing shade poles, the challenge was to create a play space that maximised every metre while replacing an ageing playground with something that could serve both younger and older students. The result combines a Ngā Papa Tākaro themed playground with a wide range of play experiences and different levels of challenge.

Meeting houses, slides, interactive play panels and a shopfront create spaces for younger children to explore, imagine and play together. As confidence grows, children can progress to more challenging elements including wall climbs, balance beams, stepping pods, an inclined log stepper, arc climber, gladiator rings, turn bars and a fire pole. This variety also creates plenty of opportunities for children of different ages and abilities to play alongside and learn from one another.

More than a place to play, the playground supports the values Ruakākā School sees every day. Older students practise tuakana-teina, helping younger children tackle new challenges, while play creates opportunities to show manaaki, respect and kindness towards one another. As Deputy Principal Theresa describes it, the playground gives every child the chance to "show their shine" while building resilience through pāpāhūia, never giving up.

Today, the playground has become a vibrant gathering place that strengthens connection, encourages outdoor play and reflects the culture that makes Ruakākā School unique.
