Te Kōhanga Reo o Manurewa needed to replace its well-used playground with a new space that would cater for tamariki aged 1–5, bringing different ages and stages together to play in one shared area.

The Papa Tākaro combines imaginative, social and active play. The connected play module with slides, climbing elements, a tunnel, play panels and shopfront encourage tamariki to make up their own games and play together.

Stepping logs and timber balance beams extend play beyond the main module, giving tamariki different ways to test their balance and coordination. With varying heights and levels of challenge, they can build confidence and try something a little harder as their skills develop.

The new playground also had to fit within the existing space and work around the existing shade sail structures, so the layout was designed to make good use of the area available.

The result is a playground with plenty to explore, whether it’s climbing and balancing, racing down the slides, moving between the different areas or simply making up a game with friends.
