The redevelopment of Tūora Fendalton School's playgrounds was part of the school's ongoing transformation following the Christchurch earthquakes, with the school among the last to receive upgrades and replacements. The school principal was a strong advocate for the playground upgrades, helping drive the project forward and ensuring students had access to modern, engaging playspaces.
Working collaboratively with Ben Bellamy Architects, who led the design process, Playground People supplied the play equipment for two distinct playspaces. The junior playground was completed first, followed by the senior playground.
A key part of the design was incorporating a narrative that reflects the area's cultural and natural history. Traditionally, mana whenua travelled through this part of Canterbury, where the waterways, native plants and vegetation held significant value.
This connection to the landscape is reflected throughout both playgrounds, with their names and colour palettes inspired by the surrounding vegetation. By weaving these elements into the design, the school continues to share and celebrate the stories of the land.
Together these two engaging playspaces provide opportunities for play, and physical development, while creating a meaningful connection between the school, its students and the local environment.
