Designed and delivered by Playground People, the new playground at Gladstone School is a vibrant, high-energy space has proven to be a huge success with students and staff. Created specifically for senior tamariki, the playground provides a strong mix of physical challenge, dynamic movement and social connection.
At the centre of the space sits a stepped mound inspired by Owairaka Maunga, created with subtle pā-themed detailing that acknowledges the area’s history. The custom matting design references the flow of nearby Oakley Creek, visually linking the different play zones. A Whare structure overlooks the playground, providing a natural meeting point for elevated socialising.
The standout multi-level structure offers graduated levels of difficulty, helping students build confidence, coordination and strength. High-impact features such as the Kompan Rocket Roller and the 25-metre Flying Fox bring speed, excitement and healthy risk-taking into the mix, ensuring older students stay engaged and active.
A special feature is the kaitiaki pou, carved on site by a local carver. It adds a distinctive identity to the playground and reflects the school’s connection to place.
Most importantly, the result is a space that work: high use, built to last, and a school community that is genuinely thrilled with the outcome.
