Kirikiri Reserve
Kirikiri Reserve in Papakura was developed to provide a more inclusive and accessible play environment, giving children with a range of abilities opportunities to play alongside one another.
Delivered in conjunction with Auckland Council, the project and design were supported in part by local parents seeking a more inclusive play opportunities for children with disabilities within their community.
Central to the playground is a custom KOMPAN Sensory Dome, specifically designed to support play across different abilities. At ground level, accessible pathways and generous space allow children using wheelchairs, as well as those requiring caregiver support, to move within the structure. A variety of sensory play elements provide opportunities to play through touch, sight and movement.
Above, interconnected nets provide progressively challenging opportunities for climbing, crawling and navigating through the structure, supporting strength, stability, coordination and confidence. The open, transparent design allows children to see and interact with one another across different levels, encouraging communication, cooperation, and shared experiences. As children move through the structure, the nets respond and sway, creating movement that can be experienced by children playing at ground level and helping connect play across the different levels.
At the top of the dome, a grass-like surface provides a tactile meeting and resting point, adding another sensory experience while creating a space for children to pause and socialise.
The Sensory Dome was customised for Kirikiri Reserve with the addition of an agility trail and tube slide, further extending the range of physical play experiences and levels of challenge available.
Inclusive and sensory play opportunities continue throughout the playground with an in-ground KOMPAN trampoline, interactive musical instruments, play panel and a range of swings, including the 4.5m high Serious Air Swing.
Wet pour rubber surfacing provides a continuous accessible surface through the play space, supporting easier movement between the different activities and equipment.
Together, these elements provide multiple ways for children to participate in play, whether through climbing and movement, sensory exploration, music, swinging, or social interaction. Creating a playground where children with different abilities can share the same play environment.
