Owairaka District School

Owairaka senior playground was created as part of a wider school redevelopment, replacing an outdated space with a dynamic and engaging play environment. Previous concepts had not fully met the school’s expectations, so the final design was carefully developed to better reflect the needs of both students and staff.

At the heart of the playground is a striking octagonal deck tower, acting as a central hub that draws students in and encourages social interaction. This is supported by a two-circuit modular layout, providing a well-balanced mix of physical challenge, movement and exploration across a range of developmental skills.

The design was shaped through a collaborative process, with teachers and senior staff actively involving students in selecting the final concept. This ensured the space reflects the preferences of its users and has resulted in strong engagement, with students making full use of all elements and naturally spreading across the play space.

Delivered alongside ongoing building works, the project required careful coordination on an active site. This also created the opportunity to align the playground with the new architectural finishes, resulting in a cohesive and well-integrated outcome.

Most importantly, the finished playground is a space that works, highly utilised, age-appropriate, and delivering a play experience that continues to engage and challenge senior students.
